Still On The Ball

Still On The Ball

Did you know?
Micky Lin
was the national netball team captain for 6 years and boasts 102 international caps since her debut in 2004.

After 102 caps and six years as the Singapore national netball team captain, Micky Lin decided in 2016 to retire from the professional arena. She was then 31 years old. But she certainly did not stay away from the sport for too long. Together with her former teammate Kwok Shuyi, Micky founded Overathird, which started as a platform to share tips, tricks and drills with the netball community in Singapore. These days, Overathird also conducts netball programmes and camps for schools and girls.

“Our team strongly believes that through netball, we are able to live life better, and so we hope to inspire the next generation of girls to pursue the sport,” says Micky about her motivation to set up Overathird. “Netball is a beautiful sport that requires players to think on their feet, handle pressure well, and work as a team in order to succeed.”

Micky is of course speaking from experience. She picked up netball at 10 as a co-curricular activity in school, and has never stopped playing since. The sport, she says, has taught her a great deal about leadership, teamwork and perseverance. But most of all, it has helped her develop empathy. “The ability to relate to people from different walks of life is something that I’ve picked up from netball and this has served me well away from the courts,” Micky lets in. Her advice to aspiring netballers? “Focus on the process, and the results will follow.”

Calling all campers!
This school holiday, Overathird is partnering Singapore Sports Hub to conduct customised netball camps for students. Expect two days of fun through netball, as you develop a better understanding of the game and improve your court performance while making new friends. To find out more, visit here.
