Building Confidence, Character & Skill

Building Confidence, Character & Skill

The phrase “sports aren’t for me” may soon be a thing of the past, thanks to the Sports Development Series. This initiative by Singapore Sports Hub fosters a safe and nurturing space for young ones to try their hand at various sports. Participants will be able to gradually build up confidence in their abilities and practise them regularly.

Kicking off the series this year-end school holiday is a programme dedicated to duathlons, which involve running and cycling. Over five weekly sessions, participants will be taught the fundamentals of bike handling, and skills for competency and efficiency in cycling and running. Each session is held between 9am and 11am on a Saturday morning at the 100PLUS Promenade. The classes culminate in a mini-duathlon, which will see participants running and pedalling across various distances.

The programme has been developed in collaboration with the Triathlon Association of Singapore (TAS), ensuring that the training sessions are tried-and-tested and relevant. As part of this collaboration, participants who sign up for all five sessions will receive a complimentary year-long membership with TAS worth $24. This provides free access to TAS-organised events in 2020, including the Singapore Aquathlon, Duathlon and Triathlon.

Children between 7 and 12 years are welcome to attend, as long as they can ride a two-wheeled bicycle. Classes are capped at 20 participants to ensure a suitable instructor-student ratio. The focus once more, is on building lifelong skills, character and confidence in children. “We will modify the programme extensively to each participant, so that we tap everyone’s potential in a safe and sensible manner.”

A five-session package, which includes the perks listed above, costs $100. Individual classes can be attended for $25, but participants do not receive additional goodies. Look out for more Sports Development Series coming your way in 2020! For more information, visit here.
