FITNESS MEETS TECH

Outside of his job as an aviation engineer, Mr Lester Sanidad, 31, is an avid obstacle course racer. He had competed in multiple races and pushed himself hard in training, but couldn’t get the results he wanted. Frustrated, he signed up for a free ELXR® Fitness Assessment session at Singapore Sports Hub in early September. “I wanted to know what my fitness level was, and what I could do to improve my performance in races,” says Mr Sanidad.

The 1.5-hour ELXR® Fitness Assessment, held twice a month at 100PLUS Promenade, is the latest community initiative by Singapore Sports Hub in collaboration with ELXR®. Guided by professional coaches, participants are put through their paces via a series of nine physical modalities that respectively determine their flexibility, agility, power, speed, aerobic capacity, strength, endurance, anaerobic capacity and balance. Based on the results, the coaches then recommend a customised training regimen to address specific areas of improvement for the participants.

Unlike most other fitness tests, the ELXR® Fitness Assessment includes the novel use of a smartphone app that allows participants to self-track their progress while undergoing the various assessments. After that, participants can continue using the ELXR® app to log their workouts as well as connect with like-minded app users and social groups in the same vicinity. The app, launched in August 2018, is available for free on both App Store and Google Play.

“I use the app daily to monitor my progress and that of my peers. It motivates me to stick to my training because I want to improve like them,” says Ms Yvonne Hee, 37, who works in the finance industry. The mother of one took part in the ELXR® Fitness Assessment so as to improve on her personal best in long-distance running events. As for Mr Sanidad, he incorporated more running into his exercise routine after undergoing the assessment, and has since started to see some improvements in his race finishes.

The ELXR® Fitness Assessment is open to those aged 16 years old and above. Look out and register for upcoming sessions at Experience Sports Sessions.
